Lightbulbs & Lazers Animation has taken another step in establishing its presence within the international creative-services ecosystem, with the Zimbabwean studio now listed on Sortlist, a global platform connecting businesses with creative and digital agencies.

The new listing places Lightbulbs & Lazers among creative providers serving clients from Harare, Zimbabwe, while presenting the studio’s expertise across 2D and 3D animation, film, advertising, game development, motion design and AR/VR/XR experiences. Sortlist also identifies Lightbulbs & Lazers as a research-led creative studio, reflecting an approach that has increasingly become central to the company’s work.

For Lightbulbs & Lazers, however, research is not simply an additional service. It is part of the studio’s philosophy of storytelling.

The company’s founding premise is to merge compelling narratives with rigorous research to address pressing local and global issues. Its team brings together social science, communication, animation, design, filmmaking and emerging technology to develop stories that are not only visually engaging, but grounded in context and audience understanding.

Why research matters to storytelling

Digital media has fundamentally changed how audiences encounter information and stories. Animation, social media, interactive experiences, games, VR and XR can reach audiences in ways that traditional communication alone cannot.

But technology does not automatically make communication effective.

The challenge is understanding what audiences need to know, what they believe, what motivates them and how they are likely to respond.

This is where Lightbulbs & Lazers applies research-led creative practice. The studio combines audience and contextual insight with storytelling, visual communication and technology to translate complex subjects into accessible and engaging experiences.

This approach has been demonstrated through projects involving social causes, public-interest communication and youth development, as well as through the studio’s creative production work.

The company’s original animated drama Body Count provides one of its clearest examples. The completed series uses animation and dramatic storytelling to explore relationships, masculinity, reproductive health, faith, stigma and the consequences of personal choices. Rather than treating these subjects as conventional information campaigns, the series uses characters and narrative to create space for audiences to engage emotionally with difficult conversations.

The Body Count project subsequently expanded beyond the screen through the publication of Body Count: The Glow-Up, demonstrating how original intellectual property can develop across animation, publishing and digital media.

Partnerships that connect creativity with social impact

Lightbulbs & Lazers’ research-led approach has also informed its work with organisations operating within Zimbabwe’s wider social-impact and communications ecosystem.

The studio’s portfolio includes work and collaborations involving organisations such as the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Bloomberg Philanthropies-supported initiatives, Matamba Film Labs for Women and the MAMA Network. Its work with Matamba included animation and extended-reality mentorship for emerging female creators, while its wider practice has involved digital storytelling, creative research and innovative multimedia communication.

The studio has also worked within Zimbabwe’s local media and creative ecosystem, including collaborations with Heart and Soul TV (HSTV) and EarGround. These relationships are significant because they connect animation and creative production with established channels through which Zimbabwean audiences encounter stories, culture and public-interest information.

At the same time, Lightbulbs & Lazers continues to develop original entertainment properties. The World of Kurhwa combines game development, animation, world-building and transmedia storytelling, while allowing the studio to explore how African stories can be developed for contemporary interactive and immersive platforms.

From Zimbabwe to the wider digital creative economy

The Sortlist listing represents more than another online directory entry. It forms part of a broader effort to make Zimbabwean creative production more discoverable to clients looking for specialist expertise in animation, digital storytelling and emerging media.

Lightbulbs & Lazers joins Sortlist with a portfolio that demonstrates completed production, original intellectual property, research-led communication, social-impact work and partnerships across the creative sector.

Its proposition is therefore straightforward: use research to understand the story, creativity to make it compelling, and technology to give it reach.

As digital media continues to reshape how organisations communicate and how audiences consume stories, Lightbulbs & Lazers is building a distinctly African model of creative production—one where animation, film, research, games, VR and XR work together to create stories that inform, entertain and inspire meaningful change.
