Producer | Animator | Researcher | Creative Entrepreneur
Lightbulbs & Lazers Research Consultants is strengthening its creative research and storytelling capabilities with the addition of Eugene Ramirez Mapondera, a Zimbabwean animation producer, creative entrepreneur, researcher and multidisciplinary artist based in Harare.
Eugene brings more than a decade of experience working across animation, film, comics, advertising, digital media and creative-sector development. His career has taken him from freelance illustration and storyboarding to animation production, creative direction, film judging, industry development and the management of large-scale creative projects.
His decision to join Lightbulbs & Lazers (L&L) represents a natural progression in that career: bringing together his experience as a creative practitioner with his academic background as a social scientist and his growing interest in research, creative-sector development and the economic and social impact of storytelling.
At L&L, Eugene contributes a combination of creative production expertise, research capability, industry knowledge and strategic thinking to an organisation whose work sits at the intersection of research and creative problem-solving.

From Comics and Storyboards to Creative Production
Eugene’s professional creative career began in the late 2000s, working across illustration, storyboarding, graphic design and 3D visualisation.
His early work included freelance storyboarding and visual development for advertising agencies and production companies in Zimbabwe, including Upton Fulton, McCann, Barker McCormack, Ogilvy and other creative and production organisations.
This period established a foundation that would remain central to his career: the ability to translate ideas into compelling visual narratives.
He developed particular expertise in character design, storyboarding, illustration and 3D visualisation while working on projects for both local and international clients. His international film credits include projects such as Boston (2014) and The Secret Princess (2016).
His work eventually expanded beyond individual creative commissions into the development of original intellectual property and creative enterprises.
Building a Career in African Comics and Storytelling
Eugene became increasingly recognised for his contribution to Zimbabwe’s emerging comic book industry.
He developed original characters and properties including The Dark Mind, Nhepfenyuro Man and Umzingeli: The Bounty Huntress, while also contributing to a growing community of Zimbabwean comic book artists and storytellers.
In 2015, he co-founded ComExposed, Zimbabwe’s Comic Book Convention, alongside Tinodiwa Zambe Makoni. The initiative created a platform for comic artists, illustrators, writers, animators and enthusiasts to connect and showcase locally produced creative work.
The inaugural ComExposed convention was held in Harare on 25 April 2015. The event also provided a platform for the release of Eugene’s Umzingeli: The African Bounty Huntress through the Comic-UP anthology.
For Eugene, comics were more than an artistic medium. They became an entry point into a much broader interest in African storytelling, intellectual property, creative entrepreneurship and the development of sustainable creative industries.

Expanding Into Animation and Film
Eugene’s career subsequently expanded from comics into animation, film and multimedia production.
He has worked as a storyboard artist, animator, writer, producer, director and creative director across a range of productions.
His filmography includes projects such as The Idea Bridge (2020), Ephemeral Tales: The Tale of Stavo (2022), Achromatic (2023) and Who Are You? (2024).
In 2022, Eugene served as a jury member at the Durban International Film Festival, further reflecting his growing involvement not only in creative production but also in the evaluation and development of film and visual storytelling.
He has also served as a judge for creative competitions and initiatives including the International Labour Organization’s Future of Work in a Green Economy and UNESCO’s ResiliArt Illustration Contest.
These experiences have given him a perspective that extends beyond production itself. He has increasingly occupied the space between creator, producer, strategist, mentor and industry participant.

Creative Entrepreneurship and Industry Development
From 2019 to 2023, Eugene served as a co-owner and Creative Director at Kay Media Africa, where he was involved in the development and management of creative-sector initiatives.
During this period, he played a role in securing financial support and contracts exceeding £450,000 for incubation projects and creative initiatives.
He also worked with stakeholders from the private sector and development organisations to support projects such as the Scripts and Bars Programme and ComExposed.
This experience is particularly relevant to his role at Lightbulbs & Lazers.
Creative production is rarely sustained by artistic ability alone. Successful creative ventures require research, stakeholder management, fundraising, strategic planning, audience understanding, project management and an understanding of the wider economic environment in which creative work operates.
Eugene’s experience has given him exposure to each of these areas.
He remains a permanent board member of Kay Media Africa, a delivery partner of organisations including the British Council and Music In Africa Foundation.
Bringing a Social Science Perspective to Creative Industries
One of the most significant aspects of Eugene’s contribution to Lightbulbs & Lazers is the combination of his creative and academic backgrounds.
Eugene holds an Honours BSc in Political Science from the University of Zimbabwe, giving him formal training in social science, research, analysis and the study of institutions and societies.
That background complements more than a decade of practical experience in animation, film, comics, design and creative entrepreneurship.
It allows him to approach creative industries not simply as a practitioner, but also as a researcher interested in understanding why creative ecosystems succeed or fail, how artists develop sustainable careers, how audiences engage with media, and how creative work can contribute to wider social and economic outcomes.
This intersection is central to the work of Lightbulbs & Lazers.

Eugene at Lightbulbs & Lazers
At Lightbulbs & Lazers Research Consultants, Eugene joins an organisation built around the principle that creative problem-solving becomes more powerful when it is guided by sound research.
His role therefore extends beyond producing creative content.
He contributes to L&L’s work in creative-sector research, mapping, storytelling, multimedia production, capacity development and strategic communication, particularly within the Southern African context.
His experience provides the organisation with a practitioner who understands the creative industry from several directions: as an artist, animator, producer, entrepreneur, educator, researcher and project strategist.
This is particularly valuable when working with organisations seeking to understand or communicate complex social and economic issues through creative media.
Eugene can contribute to the full journey from research and insight to concept development, storytelling, production and audience engagement.
What Eugene Brings to the L&L Team
Eugene’s contribution to Lightbulbs & Lazers can be understood through four key areas.
1. Creative Production Expertise
His background in animation, film, comics, illustration, storyboarding and multimedia production strengthens L&L’s ability to turn research findings and complex ideas into engaging visual experiences.
2. Research and Analytical Thinking
His political science background gives him an analytical framework for understanding social systems, institutions, audiences and the environments in which creative industries operate.
3. Creative Industry Experience
Having worked across advertising, film, animation, comics, education and creative entrepreneurship, Eugene brings first-hand knowledge of the opportunities and structural challenges facing African creatives.
4. Strategic and Entrepreneurial Experience
His experience securing funding, managing partnerships, developing creative ventures and working with development organisations strengthens L&L’s capacity to connect creative ideas with viable projects, partnerships and sustainable outcomes.
Building the Next Chapter
Eugene’s move to Lightbulbs & Lazers represents an evolution rather than a departure from his previous work.
The same interests that took him from comic books to animation, from animation to film production, and from creative production into industry development are now being applied to a broader question:
How can research and creativity work together to build stronger creative industries and produce meaningful social and economic change?
That question sits at the heart of Lightbulbs & Lazers.
As the organisation continues to expand its work in creative research, storytelling, animation, digital media and creative-sector development across Southern Africa, Eugene brings a rare combination of practical production experience, academic research training and entrepreneurial knowledge.
His contribution is therefore not simply that of another animator or producer joining a creative team.
It is the contribution of someone who has spent his career moving between making creative work, studying the environments in which that work is produced, building platforms for other creatives, and exploring how creative industries can become more sustainable.
That experience positions Eugene Ramirez Mapondera to play an important role in Lightbulbs & Lazers’ next phase: helping transform research and insight into creative work that is not only engaging, but strategically useful, economically meaningful and capable of contributing to social change.
At Lightbulbs & Lazers, Eugene brings together the two sides of his career: the creative practitioner and the researcher. It is precisely at that intersection that the organisation sees some of his greatest value.
